Mutant Blobs Attack

Nothing good ever comes from experimenting on sentient blobs. This, in addition to being a mantra that one should apply to all aspects of life, is the “plot” of Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, in which you play as an escaped mutant blob set on eating everything (and you will).

AVSEQ

AVSEQ, or Audio Visual Sequencer is a weird game that is hard to describe to someone who hasn't played it. YOu have to chain together like colored gems to create sounds that create a song. And it tries to be both an auditory and visual experience while doing this. Unfortunately, they only accomplish one of those two goals.

Starvoid

Before I start to write this review, I feel like I must give a small disclaimer. I normally suck at real-time strategy games. And normally that is the death knell for a game like Civilization, unless they are really easy to learn. But here, Starvoid avoid all of the problem by taking out what I hate the most: the base building, resource gathering, and micro managing, and replaces them with nothing but action.

Call of Duty: World At War
Not the series’ greatest generation

Reviewed by Tom Blaich for Xbox 360
Unfortunately for Call of Duty: World at War, it came out on the wrong side of a transition period between two eras. It was the last, sad remnant of the World War 2 shooter in a Modern shooter era. And that hurt it immeasurably.

Fieldrunners
Just a bigger version

Reviewed by Tom Blaich for Mac
Originally an iOS title, Fieldrunners recently made its way onto both Macs and PCs via steam. And these mobile roots really show themselves when you are playing. And with the price tag set at $4.99, it is kind of hared to justify this purchase when you could just grab it on your iDevice for half of the price.

And Yet It Moves
It didn’t move me

Reviewed by Tom Blaich for Mac
It is hard to stick out as a platformer these days. To do so, most games usually opt to add either a distinctive visual style or a distinctive gameplay mechanic. And Yet It Moves doesn't completely buck the trend, but still turns it on its head by doing both of these things.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Scarily Great

Reviewed by Tom Blaich for Mac
Amnesia is truly terrifying. I didn't quite scream like a little girl or pee my pants, and quite frankly, I am proud of that. My palms were sweaty, my heart was racing, and my adrenaline was pumping. And the enemies relentlessly chasing me did nothing to help my situation.

Machinarium
Mechanically sound, but somewhat lacking

Reviewed by Tom Blaich for Mac
As far as fans of point and click adventure games go, I'm not the biggest. It isn't that I don't like the games themselves, it's that I'm just not very good at them. But with Machinarium, I was able to finally surpass that long hated difficulty barrier and thoroughly enjoy myself.

LIMBO
Darkly entertaining

Reviewed by Tom Blaich for Mac
One can draw many similarities between Braid and LIMBO without ever have seeing the game. But the second that they catch sight of it, they will notice two things that set it apart from its peers. There is both a distinct lack of what is normally thought of a soundtrack, and a very distinctive visual style that leaves it standing alone.

Jets and Guns Gold
Blasted me right off of my feet

Jets and Guns is something of a curious mix of a classic side scrolling shoot em' up and the kind of endlessly hilarious jokes that one might find in a typical episode of Saturday Night Live. And I mean that in all the good ways.

Quake 4
It isn’t ground breaking

Reviewed by Tom Blaich for Mac
The opening cinematic for Quake 4 sums the game up pretty well for you. It's bloody, it's surprising, and it is epic, if a little on the cheesy side. A great shooter to eat up spare time, but not one to invest countless hours in or find an in-depth story.

Galaxy on Fire 2 Full HD
Still stuck in the iPhone galaxy

Reviewed by Tom Blaich for Mac
This isn't the first time that I had played this game. And what I mean by that is that I had played it on the iPhone and iPad before playing it on the Mac. So I was expecting a good upgrade to the game that added better controls, a more fully fleshed out story, better graphics, and more missions. Unfortunately, I only got two of these things, and they were the two that I think that are least important.

Kerbal Space Program
A rare gem in the video game universe
Reviewed by Josh Remender for PC
Before you sit down to play Kerbal Space Program, take yourself back to the time when you were, say, five years old. What did you want to be when you grew up? Most likely, at one point, you said an astronaut. Unfortunately, most of our childhood dreams don't come true.

Diablo III
Hell, It’s about time

Reviewed by Ethan Binch for PC
“Hell, It's about time.” The famous words of Tychus Findlay are all I could think about the first time I started the game up to play. While this quote does not come from the Diablo series, it still fits the situation perfectly. Blizzard Entertainment is famous for the amount of time they take to develop their games, but they are also famous for producing some of the greatest PC games of all time. Diablo 3 is no exception.

Bastion
The last bastion of art house games

Before I played Bastion, I had never heard a single bad thing about it. So I went into this with a small measure of trepidation, expecting to find something terrible about this game. But, not very surprisingly enough, I liked Bastion. It wasn't perfect, but it got a whole lot closer than most so-called "AAA" games ever will.
